Did you know that you can make bread in your crockpot? This crockpot Irish soda bread is so easy to make and tastes great with a hearty stew or soup!
My kids thought it was really cool that we were able to make bread in our crockpot. I love the idea of using my slow cooker to make bread, don’t you? There are so many fabulous things you can make with your slow cooker and this is just one of them.
I think this recipe is especially great if you have both a three quart or six quart crockpot so that you can make the bread in your smaller crockpot and then make a stew in your large crockpot.
What is the texture like?
Irish soda bread is a bit like a biscuit to me. It is just slightly sweet.
Ingredients needed
For this recipe, you will need:
- Bread flour
- Sugar
- Baking powder and baking soda
- Salt
- Butter
- Buttermilk
How to make
In a large bowl add the dry ingredients together and stir well. Use a pastry cutter to add the butter in to the dough. After adding the butter, add approximately half of the buttermilk and begin to mix the dough by hand. Add the remaining buttermilk and knead the dough on a floured surface for about two minutes (knead longer if dough is still lumpy). Set the dough in a three quart slow cooker and cook on high for two hours. Serve with butter.
Variations
- Try this bread with raisins, about 1 cup will do.
