Why you’ll love these cookies

  • They’re easy peasy to make!
  • They taste great.
  • No need to make frosting or roll them out.

Ingredients needed

ingredients needed to make Patriotic Sugar Cookies

For these cookies, you will need:

  • Butter: I recommend using unsalted butter for these cookies. You’ll want to soften your butter to room temperature.
  • Sugar: To sweeten the cookies.
  • Vanilla extract: If possible, I recommend using pure vanilla extract.
  • All purpose flour: The base of the cookie dough.
  • Baking powder: To help the cookies rise. Be sure to change your baking powder out every now and then. It’s inexpensive to do and it will make a big difference in your baking.
  • Salt: You’ll need just ¼ of a teaspoon of salt.
  • Red, white, and blue sprinkles: I used Wilton brand sprinkles for my cookies.

How to make these cookies

  • With either a hand mixer or a stand mixer, cream together the sugar and the butter (softened to room temperature). You’ll want to cream until it becomes light and fluffy (about one minute).
  • Next, add in your egg and vanilla. Gently mix it in.
  • Add in your dry ingredients (flour, baking powder, and salt). Mix well with your mixer until well combined. The dough may seem crumbly but that is normal.
  • Chill the dough for at least one hour in your refrigerator.
  • Once the dough is chilled, preheat your oven to 350 degrees.
  • Add your red, white, and blue sprinkles to a small bowl.
  • Either grease a cookie sheet or line it with parchment paper (not wax paper).
  • Roll the dough into large balls (about 2 tablespoons each) and then roll the dough in the bowl of sprinkles.
  • Bake 4 to 6 cookies at a time (they will spread some) for 9 to 10 minutes. Let them sit on the baking sheet for 10 minutes after baking before you transfer them. This will help them finish baking.

Tips

  • Be sure to chill your dough for at least one hour. This will help keep them from spreading.

How to store

You can store these cookies in an airtight container at room temperature. They will be good for 2 to 3 days after making.
