I’ve been pregnant three times in three years and delivered two babies (yes, I’m a survivor of two under two!) and my body has changed a lot. I finally took the time to go through all of my bras to see what fits and what doesn’t. There were a lot of bras that no longer fit. I put all of my bras that were still in good shape in a box and mailed them to Free The Girls. Free The Girls is a non-profit organization that empowers women who have been victims of sex-trafficking in developing countries. Apparently, there’s a huge demand for secondhand bras in these countries so Free The Girls helps women set up on their own business reselling bras.
Free The Girls has made a huge impact, just last year they received over 183,000 bras. That’s a lot! They rely on local volunteers who help with their “packing parties” to distribute the bras worldwide. Also, nothing goes to waste! Low quality bras are sold to a recycler. Other items that end up being donated (they only accept bras) are donated to local charities. Bras that don’t make the cut but are still in decent shape aren’t wasted. The bras are also sent to women’s prisons, a homeless shelter, and a pregnancy center so you can feel really good about where your items are going.
If you don’t have the money to ship them directly, they do have a network of drop off locations listed on their website. Also, donation drives are frequently held. Next time, I will try to host a bra drive with my local mom’s group for a bigger impact. They also suggest donating about a dollar a bra to help with shipping costs, although this isn’t mandatory.
Wondering what to do with your old bras? I definitely encourage you to send them to Free The Girls! Every little thing adds up to one big thing when fighting sex trafficking.
