These

have such a sad name but are such a yummy cookie. They are an old fashioned, traditional Amish recipe. These cookies were often brought to grieving families.

Ingredients

shortening

white sugar

brown sugar

large eggs

all purpose flour

quick oats

teaspoon
salt

teaspoon
baking soda

baking powder

teaspoon
vanilla extract

teaspoon
cinnamon

cup
raisins
½
cup
chopped dates
Instructions
Begin by preheating your oven to 350 degrees. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper (not wax paper) or grease it well.
In a large mixing bowl, combine the shortening, sugars, and vanilla. Mix with a hand or stand mixer until creamy.
Add in the remaining ingredients except for the raisins and dates. Mix until well combined.
Stir in the raisins and dates.
Use about two heaping tablespoons of dough to form dough balls.
Bake for 10-12 minutes or until edges are golden.
