These Amish funeral cookies have such a sad name but are such a yummy cookie. They are an old fashioned, traditional Amish recipe. These cookies were often brought to grieving families.

The name sounds depressing but these Amish funeral cookies are a quick treat to make for a bereaved friend. There is no chill time needed for the dough and no complicated ingredients are needed. These cookies are the perfect treat to make when you quickly need food or treats on hand. They are loaded with wholesome oats, raisins, and chopped dates.

The Ingredients needed to make amish funeral cookies.

For these cookies, you will need:

  • Shortening: Use plain, not butter flavored.
  • White sugar and brown sugar: To sweeten the cookies.
  • Large eggs: You will need two large eggs for this recipe.
  • All purpose flour
  • Quick oats: Or you can use old fashioned oats.
  • Salt
  • Baking soda and baking powder
  • Vanilla extract
  • Cinnamon
  • Raisins and chopped dates

🍫 Variations

Traditionally these cookies call for raisins and dates but you can also substitute chocolate chips, craisins, white chocolate chips, or nuts like pecans or walnuts.

Begin by preheating your oven to 350 degrees. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper (not wax paper) or grease it well.

In a large mixing bowl, combine the shortening, sugars, and vanilla. Mix with a hand or stand mixer until creamy (image 1).

Add in the remaining ingredients except for the raisins and dates. Mix until well combined (image 2).

Stir in the raisins and dates (image 3).

Use about two heaping tablespoons of dough to form dough balls (image 4).

Bake for 10-12 minutes or until edges are golden.

  • You can add more raisins and dates, if desired.

Store any leftover cookies at room temperature in an airtight container. They will be good for up to four days after making.
