🦁 The story of Daniel
Daniel and the lions den is such an important story because it teaches us to trust in God even in the most dire of circumstances.
Darius was the king of Babylon. He decided to pick some of the best men of the land to help him. These men helped to counsel him (they helped him to make big decisions). Daniel was one of the men that the king picked to help him. King Darius thought Daniel was so great and respected him so much that he was considering making him the ruler of the kingdom.
This made some of the other men that were counseling the king very, very jealous. They wanted to do something to make Daniel look bad but Daniel was a good person and they couldn’t find any way to make him look bad.
They thought really hard and decided that since Daniel was such a Godly man that they could use that. They knew that Daniel prayed to God three times a day, every day.
The bad men thought up a plan! They tricked King Darius into signing a new law that said people could only pray to King Darius. If someone prayed to someone else besides King Darius they would be thrown into a den of hungry lions.
Despite the new law, Daniel knew the right thing to do was to continue to pray to God. He would not follow the new law. Daniel was arrested. King Darius wanted to save Daniel but he couldn’t so Daniel was thrown into the pit of hungry lions. Before he was thrown in, King Darius told Daniel his God would save him.
That night King Darius couldn’t sleep at all because he was thinking of Daniel.
There was a miracle the next morning. Daniel was found alive in the lions den! God had saved him. King Darius decided everyone would worship Daniel’s God, the one true God.

Product recommendations
I really love the two books below. This Beginner’s Bible is perfect for preschoolers who are not yet reading. I also really love the Bedtime Bible Story Book for older kids. They outline the story of Daniel and the lions den really well, if you’re looking for a book to go along with this lesson.

✂️ How to make the lion craft
To make this paper plate lion craft, begin by having your child paint the paper plate with washable, non-toxic yellow paint. Once the paint has dried, let your child cut short lines on the edges to create a mane for their lion.
Hot glue the googly eyes on and draw a nose and mouth for your child.

This lion’s den craft is so cute! Older kids could take it a step further too and glue on orange or white strips of craft paper to make a bushier mane. Neat idea!
