I’m a huge fan of matcha. It is one of my favorite flavors. When we lived in Houston, I used to work near an H-mart (an amazing Korean grocery store). I would get so many matcha flavored items like Kit Kats, Oreos, and ice cream!

My matcha craving was hitting me pretty hard but now we’re no where near a big Asian grocery store like H-mart. I decided matcha crinkle cookies had to become a thing! I based this recipe off of my vanilla crinkle cookies and they turned out wonderfully.

These cookies are sweet, soft, and beautifully crinkled. Plus, they stand out beautifully on a tray or plate of Christmas cookies. Green is the perfect color for the holidays.

What ingredients are needed to make this recipe?

For these matcha crinkle cookies, you will need:

  • All purpose flour: Be sure to measure the flour correctly for these cookies. I recommend using a butter knife to level off your flour from your measuring cup.
  • Baking soda and baking powder: Be sure to use fresh baking soda and baking powder for the best results.
  • Salt: You’ll need just ½ teaspoon of salt.
  • White sugar: To sweeten the cookies.
  • Butter: You’ll need unsalted butter and you’ll also want to soften the butter.
  • Vanilla extract: I recommend pure vanilla extract for baking.
  • Eggs: You’ll need two large eggs for this recipe.
  • Matcha powder: I recommend using a brand that says “culinary grade” on the label.
  • Green food coloring: This is an optional ingredient. If you want your cookies to be a vibrant green then add a few drops of green food coloring.
  • Powdered sugar and additional white sugar: To coat the crinkle cookies in.

You will also need a large mixing bowl, baking sheet, and I also recommend using parchment paper (NOT wax paper) for baking.

What kind of matcha should I use for these cookies?

I used Jade Leaf in my matcha crinkle cookies. I recommend using a brand that has a label that says “culinary grade” if you can.

Tips for this recipe

  • If you want your cookies to be very green, be sure to add a few drops of green food coloring.
  • Be sure to let the dough chill. Skipping the chilling may make the cookies too flat.
  • This recipe calls for softened butter, not melted.
  • Dip your formed cookie balls into white sugar and then into powdered sugar. This will help the powdered sugar stay on while baking and will make your cookies turn out beautifully.

How to make these cookies (step by step guide)

Begin by combining the dry ingredients in a large mixing bowl and stir well.

Next, add in your wet ingredients. Mix with a hand mixer. Dough may seem crumbly at first but continue mixing until it is formed.

Chill the dough for at least thirty minutes before baking. Chilling for an hour or two is best. You can also chill the dough overnight, if needed.

Form the dough into balls (about 1 ½ tablespoons of dough) and roll them in the white sugar. Next, roll them generously in the powdered sugar.

Bake at 325 degrees for 10 to 12 minutes. Carefully and gently transfer them to a cooling rack and then let them cool before serving.
