🍪 Ingredients needed
For this recipe, you will need:
- Butter: You will need 12 tablespoons of butter for this recipe (¾ cup). I recommend using unsalted butter since salted butter can have more water.
- Brown sugar: To sweeten the cookies.
- Yellow cake mix: The base of the cookies. I’ve found that at my local grocery store, yellow cake mix comes in either 15 oz or 16.5 oz. You can use either size but if using the larger size you may need to add one additional tablespoon of milk.
- Oats: You can use quick or old fashioned.
- Peanut butter: I recommend using regular creamy peanut butter and not natural peanut butter.
- Egg: You will need one large egg of this recipe.
- Milk: You can substitute water if you don’t have any milk on hand.
🥣 Equipment needed
You will need a large mixing bowl, stand or hand mixer, and a baking sheet. I used parchment paper (not wax paper) but you can also grease your baking sheet well.
⏲️ How to make (step by step guide)
Preheat your oven to 350 degrees.
Next, in a large mixing bowl add the cake mix, brown sugar, peanut butter, butter, milk, and egg. Mix until well combined.
Next, stir in the oats, chocolate chips, and M&Ms with a large spoon.
Form large dough balls (about 3 tablespoons) and add to a parchment paper (NOT wax paper) lined baking sheet or a well greased baking sheet. Leave room for the cookies to spread some (I did 6 per sheet).
Bake for 12-15 minutes at 350 degrees. I recommend checking at 12 minutes (I baked mine for 13). Let the cookies rest on the baking sheet for at least 10 minutes before transferring to a cooling rack. This will help them finish baking.
👩🏻🍳 Variations
- You can swap the chocolate chips for raisins or double up the M&Ms, this is a very versatile recipe.
- Walnuts or pecans are also good in these cookies. Add ½ cup if desired.
⭐ Tips
- Let the cookies rest on the baking sheet before transferring. This will help them to finish baking.
🧾 How to store leftovers
Store any leftover cookies in an airtight container at room temperature. Cookies will be good for up to four days after making.
📋 Recipe FAQs
Monster cookies are a mix of so many different ingredients. They really are a monster of a cookie!
You can use cake mix to make cookies but it shouldn’t be used as a substitute in a recipe that calls for flour.
For the best flavor, I recommend using a box of yellow cake mix.

Quick and easy recipe for a fantastic cookie. Great texture. I used chocolate chips and walnuts (1/2 cup of each) and these were a hit! I’m usually a “scratch” baker, but every now and then I do a little cheating. Thanks so much for sharing this!
