My kids really love helping me in the kitchen. Sometimes it can be kind of stressful with a three year old and a two year old trying to help me. I have found that having them help put everything in our bread machine is not only fun for them but it helps with messes. Another thing they can help with is making play dough!
This glitter play dough recipe is so easy and best of all kids love to help make it. My kids LOVE glitter but it can be so messy. Luckily, all the glitter stays in the play dough once it’s done. This play dough is one of the best glitter projects out there as far as mess goes.
We used pink food coloring for our play dough and chunky glitter because my daughter loves pink. You can also use other colors and smaller glitter flakes as well. It would be fun to do orange or black with sparkles for Halloween or red and green for Christmas. There are so many fun ideas you could use this play dough for.

What ingredients do I need?
To make this play dough, you will need:
- Water
- Vegetable oil
- All purpose flour
- Cream of tartar
- Food coloring
- Salt
- Glitter
Do I have to use cream of tartar? What does it do?
Yes, I know not everyone keeps cream of tartar on hand but it helps the play dough not to crumble and to be less messy. It also acts a preservative to help your play dough last a super long time.
How to store play dough
Any airtight container will work for storing your homemade glitter play dough. You can reuse old play dough containers, use ziplock baggies, or use plastic tupperware containers.
How much play dough does this recipe make?
This recipe makes about four commercial containers worth of play dough.
Tips for making this play dough
- If your play dough seems too dry, add a few more tablespoons of water at a time until it is the right consistency.
- If your play dough seems too wet, try adding more flour.
- Let your play dough set out for a few minutes before playing with it. It may seem sticky at first. Let it “air dry” for about 10 to 15 minutes. I know it is kind of pain, but it will help a lot and keep this recipe an easy with no cooking involved.
- Try making several different batches with different colors and different types of glitter.
- Make sure you are adding a full cup of salt. It helps the play dough to not be sticky.

Equipment
- Mixing bowl
Materials
- ¾ cup water
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
- 2 cups all purpose flour
- 1 cup salt
- 2 tablespoon cream of tartar
- food coloring
- glitter (we used about ¼ cup of glitter)
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl combine all the dry ingredients and stir well.
- Next, add in your wet ingredients. Stir well.
- The play dough may be sticky at first. I found that after letting it sit out for about 10 minutes helped it air out and it was much more like commercial play dough.
