Are you a banana pudding fan? I know I am. This classic recipe is such a great comfort food. I always get lots of compliments on this Lorna Doone banana pudding recipe at potlucks.

I am in no way a vanilla wafer hater (for proof, see my secret ingredient banana pudding recipe) but I love to make banana pudding with Lorna Doone shortbread cookies! They are such a great cookie and bump this banana pudding recipe up to the next level.

This banana pudding is still a pretty traditional recipe with just a few slight changes and tweaks.

This recipe is so fun to make for friends and family, whether it’s an after dinner treat or a dessert for your next backyard barbecue. This banana pudding is also awesome because it doesn’t have to be eaten all in one sitting, you can just stick it back in the fridge and enjoy it over the next few days.

Lorna Doone Banana Pudding ingredients

To make this Lorna Doone banana pudding recipe, you’ll need:

  • 1 package Lorna Doone shortbread cookies
  • 1 container frozen whipped topping (defrosted) 12 ounces
  • 1 can sweetened condensed milk
  • 4 ounces cream cheese (softened at room temperature)
  • 1.5 cups milk
  • 1 box Vanilla or French Vanilla instant pudding mix
  • 5 bananas sliced
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon nutmeg

🥣 Step by step instructions on how to make this recipe

To make this recipe, begin by gathering and measuring out your ingredients. You’ll need:

  • 1 package Lorna Doone shortbread cookies
  • 1 container frozen whipped topping (defrosted) 12 ounces
  • 1 can sweetened condensed milk
  • 4 ounces cream cheese (softened at room temperature)
  • 1.5 cups milk
  • 1 box Vanilla or French Vanilla instant pudding mix
  • 5 bananas sliced
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon nutmeg

Begin by lining a baking dish (I used a 13x9x2 size dish) with a layer of the Lorna Doone cookies and half of the sliced bananas. Next, using a a mixing bowl add the milk, pudding mix, cream cheese, condensed milk, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Mix the ingredients in the mixing bowl until they are smooth (especially the cream cheese, be sure it has softened before you mix it in) and then fold in the whipped topping. Pour the mixture over the cookies. Add the sliced bananas on top. Refrigerate for at least an hour before serving.

🗒️ How do I keep the bananas from browning?

If you want to prepare this recipe the day before having guests or bringing it to a potluck and you want it to look extra nice, brush a small amount of lemon juice on the bananas. The lemon juice will reduce the browning in the bananas and keep your banana pudding looking beautiful.

    Other measurements please:
Can you please modify your recipe to show measurements and not just cans, box and packages?
How many oz is in the condensed milk, my can is 14 oz
I am guessing the pudding is a regular size box which is 4 1/2 cup servings. I never ever buy instant pudding, the taste just isn’t the same. I will cook the pudding and then mix it with the other ingredients and add a little more milk.

Hi Kim, the condensed milk I used was 14 ounces and the instant pudding was 3.4 ounces. I haven’t tested it by making the pudding and adding it in so I can’t say how it will turn out.

Hi Kim, you can use more or less depending on your personal preference. One box will have more than enough though.

Can you layer the cookies, bananas, and pudding mixture like with vanilla wafers?
Also, how long can this be refrigerated before the cookies get soft?

Yes, you can. It’ll get soft like it does regular banana pudding within a few hours.
