These banana cardamom muffins have such a delicious flavor. Everyone will ask you what the secret ingredient is in these tasty muffins!
Bananas are always hit or miss at my house. With two toddlers, it seems like they have a love/hate relationship with bananas. Some weeks they’re all gone and some weeks I need to make banana muffins with all the brown bananas we have!
These cardamom spiced banana muffins are such a fun twist on traditional banana muffins. The cardamom gives them such a wonderful but very subtle flavor.

What is cardamom?
Cardamom is a spice that is often used in Indian cooking. It is also sometimes used in Nordic recipes. It used in both sweet and savory dishes as well as some teas.
Ingredients needed
- All purpose flour: The base of the batter for the muffins.
- Salt: You’ll need just half of a teaspoon of salt
- Ground cardamom: This banana muffin recipe uses no cinnamon and no nutmeg, instead it uses cardamom to give it a little spice. Cardamom has a very nice flavor that goes great with the bananas.
- Baking soda: To help the muffins rise.
- Sugar: To sweeten the muffins.
- Butter: I recommend using unsalted butter for this recipe. By using unsalted butter, you can control the amount of salt going into the muffins. If you only have salted on hand, you can definitely use it but I recommend leaving the salt out.
- Ripe bananas: The darker the bananas, the sweeter your muffins will be. I like mine to be pretty spotty before I make banana muffins or banana bread. You can also use frozen bananas, if desired.
- Eggs: You’ll need two large eggs for this recipe.
- Vanilla: I recommend that you use pure vanilla extract, if possible.
How to make
To make these cardamom banana muffins, begin by preheating your oven to 350 degrees.
Peel and then mash your bananas with a fork.
Melt your butter (I melted mine in my microwave) and set it aside to cool.
Next, in a large mixing bowl combine your dry ingredients (flour, baking soda, salt, ground cardamom, and sugar). Stir well with a large spoon.
Add in the wet ingredients (bananas, eggs, vanilla, and melted butter that has been cooled). Mix well with a hand mixer until everything is well combined.
Pour into a muffin tin with cupcake liners. Fill about ⅔s of the way up. Do not overfill. Bake 18 to 21 minutes or until the tops are golden and a toothpick comes out clean from the middle.
Tips for the best muffins
- Do not overfill your muffin tin. Fill no more than ⅔s of the way up. If you overfill you risk that the muffins will spill over while baking.
- Oven temperatures can vary, check your muffins at around 18 minutes.
