This salted caramel banana bread is the ultimate banana bread. If you are a fan of salted caramel then meet your new favorite banana bread recipe!

This salted caramel banana bread is the ultimate banana bread. If you are a fan of salted caramel, you will love this recipe. It is swirled with caramel sauce and then topped with salted caramel sauce for just the right amount of banana, caramel, and sea salt.
One of my favorite coffeehouse drinks to get is a salted caramel latte and this banana bread reminds me a lot of those flavors. This salted caramel banana bread is very decadent. It is more of a dessert type banana bread but I’m totally not going to judge you if you eat this banana bread for breakfast.
This decadent dessert banana bread is actually pretty easy to make. I used a shortcut with the salted caramel sauce to make things even easier. This is such a fun banana bread recipe to bring to friends, neighbors, or family! I also love this banana bread for holiday parties, brunch, or just a weekend treat.
There is something really magical about banana bread. I guess this quick bread is just classic comfort food at its finest. I really love making this recipe and it smells absolutely amazing while baking!
What type of caramel and salt do I need for this recipe?
For this recipe, you need a store bought caramel sauce. I used the type you can use in coffee drinks. For the salt, you will need a quality sea salt. If you’re not a fan of salted caramel, you can skip the sea salt and make this just a caramel drizzled banana bread.
What ingredients do I need to make this banana bread?
Check your pantry or start writing your grocery list because for this salted caramel banana bread recipe, you will need:
- Ripe bananas
- White sugar
- Brown sugar
- Baking soda
- Baking powder
- Salt
- Sea salt
- Cinnamon
- Nutmeg
- Vanilla extract
- Butter
- All purpose flour
- Caramel syrup
- Buttermilk
- Eggs
If you don’t have any buttermilk you can easily make some with milk and lemon juice or vinegar. To make one cup of buttermilk, simply add one cup of room temperature milk to two tablespoons of vinegar or lemon juice. You will need both regular salt (to bake the bread) and then sea salt for the salted caramel topping. For the caramel syrup, I used just a store bought caramel sauce to make things easy peasy.
How ripe do the bananas need to be?
You can use bananas that are a little spotty all the way to bananas that are getting very dark. Unripe bananas won’t be very flavorful so I don’t recommend using them in banana bread. The darker the banana, the sweeter the banana bread will be but even spotty bananas do fine.
Can I freeze this banana bread?
I’m a huge fan of making recipes that freeze well but because of the salted caramel sauce this banana bread does not freeze well.
How do I store this banana bread?
You can store this banana bread in an airtight container for 2-3 days in the refrigerator. When you are ready to eat some more banana bread from the fridge, heat it up using a low setting on your microwave to avoid scorching the caramel. Drizzle with some extra caramel sauce and enjoy.
Can I use frozen bananas?
If you have frozen bananas on hand you can totally use them in this recipe. Let them defrost a little so they are easier to mash and then mix in with the batter.
What else should I know about this recipe?
Be sure that you refrigerate any leftovers. You will want to warm up leftovers on low to avoid scorching your caramel sauce.
How to make this recipe
To make this banana bread, begin by gathering and measuring out your ingredients.
For the banana bread, you will need:
- 3 ripe bananas mashed with a fork
- ½ cup white sugar
- ⅓ cup brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- ½ teaspoon nutmeg
- 2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- ½ cup butter melted and cooled
- 2 ¼ cups all purpose flour
- 2 tablespoons of caramel syrup
- ¼ cup buttermilk
- 2 medium eggs beaten
For the salted caramel sauce, you will need:
- 1 teaspoon of sea salt
- 2 to 3 tablespoons of caramel sauce
To make the banana bread, mix the dry ingredients together in a large mixing bowl. Next add in your wet ingredients except for the caramel sauce. Please make sure you cool your butter a little bit or it will scramble the eggs. Using a hand mixer, mix for about three minutes or until the batter is well mixed and no longer lumpy. Pour the batter into a greased loaf pan. Pour two tablespoons of caramel sauce on top of the batter and then use a butter knife to swirl it in.
Bake your banana bread for 55 to 60 minutes at 350 degrees. A toothpick should come out clean from the middle of your loaf, if not bake it a little longer. Next, pull your loaf of banana bread out of your oven and let it cool for about 15 minutes.
While it is still warm (but has cooled a little), sprinkle the sea salt over your loaf evenly.
Add 2 to 3 tablespoons of caramel sauce over the sea salt and banana bread.
Serve and enjoy. Refrigerate any leftovers.
How to make extra salted caramel sauce
To make extra caramel sauce add 1 teaspoon of sea salt for every 2 tablespoons of caramel sauce you’d like to use. You can also experiment with adding more or less sea salt to taste. If you’re not a fan of salt, you can also skip it and just add the caramel sauce.
