These rice crispy treats made with marshmallow fluff (also called marshmallow creme) are such an easy and delicious no bake treat!

One rice crispy treat square on a white background.

While I usually use mini marshmallows in my rice cereal treats, I recently made a batch of Amish pumpkin whoopie pies that called for marshmallow fluff. I was able to use the leftover marshmallow fluff to make rice crispy treats and they turned out great.

Both my kids and my husband really love rice crispy treats and I love that they are so easy to make! Who doesn’t love a tasty, no bake treat?

💭 Rice crispy treats or rice crispie treats?

Some people say it is rice crispie treats, rice krispie, or rice cereal treats. Rice Krispie is the name brand of rice cereal. All are correct when referring to these yummy treats!

📋 Ingredients needed for this recipe

The ingredients needed to make rice crispy treats with marshmallow fluff.

I love that only four ingredients are needed. For this recipe, you will need:

  • Marshmallow fluff: Also called marshmallow creme.
  • Rice cereal: Such as Rice Krispies. I used a store brand without any problems.
  • Butter: I recommend using unsalted since salt content can vary brand to brand.
  • Vanilla extract: Pure vanilla extract is best. I recommend using it whenever possible.

🍽 What type of pan is needed?

You will need a 8 x 8 inch pan for this recipe. Be sure to grease it well.

🥣 How to make (step by step guide)

Step by step guide (a collage with 4 steps labeled) on how to make rice crispy treats with marshmallow fluff.

In a large pot, melt your butter on low. Once your butter is melted add in the marshmallow fluff and stir well over low heat (image 1). Stir slow and on low until well combined.

Once the marshmallow fluff is melted in, turn the heat off and stir in the vanilla extract. Pour the mixture over your rice cereal (image 2). Stir it together (image 3).

Gently press it into a well greased 8 x 8 pan (image 4). Cool for at least 2 hours before cutting and serving

👩🏻‍🍳 Tips for this recipe

  • Use fresh cereal and marshmallow fluff. Using stale ingredients will really impact the quality of your treats.
  • Don’t press the treats down too hard when putting them in the pan. Pushing them down too much will make them tough.
  • Use pure vanilla extract for the best results.
  • Reduce the heat before adding your vanilla extract in.

💬 Recipe FAQs

Can you use fluff instead of marshmallows?

Yes, you can use marshmallow fluff instead of marshmallows in rice crispy treats. The fluff is actually quicker to melt in with the butter.

What is a substitute for marshmallows in rice crispy treats?

Marshmallow fluff is a great substitute for marshmallows.

Does marshmallow fluff taste like marshmallows?

Marshmallow fluff tastes similar to marshmallows. It has a similar sweet flavor.

Why are my homemade rice crispy treats hard?

Rice crispy treats get hard if you press down on them too much when placing them in a pan. They will also harden in the fridge so I recommend keeping them at room temperature.

Taste good but mine didn’t stick together. I have no idea what I did wrong. I followed the directions exactly and let them set for over 5 hours. I’m not sure if it’s because it was too hot in my house (summer in AZ 🥵) or maybe because I used generic rice brand rice cereal 🤷🏼‍♀️.

I haven’t tested this with peanut butter but you could experiment. I would recommend 1/2 of a cup of creamy.

Can I double this recipe and use a larger pan to make them thicker?

I put 1/4 to 1/2 cup of pnut butter in with the butter. Stirring constantly then add the crispy. I spread it out in a buttered pan and while it’s still warm sprinkle chocolate chips randomly around the batch. I don’t recommend spreading the warm chocolates around. It can dominate the flavor of the peanut butter if you have chocolate in every bite.

Very good recipe. I had some marshmallow cream in the pantry nearing it’s expiration date so figured I’d use it somehow and found your recipe. It’s been many, many years since I’ve made rice crispy treats so I kinda felt like a kid again while making them 😅😊. I added some chocolate chips and I melted the butter and marshmallow in the microwave in a glass bowl…only took 30 seconds. Thank you for the recipe 😊
