I love rice crispy treats! Not only are they so easy to make but I love the combination of sweet with a little crunch. My kids love them too so they’re a regular staple at our house, especially these jumbo marshmallow rice crispy treats and these cookie butter rice crispy treats. Don’t need a ton of treats? Try these rice crispy treats in an 8×8 pan.

There are so many awesome rice crispy treat recipes out there but most all of them call for mini marshmallows. If you have regular marshmallows, don’t worry! You can use them with just a small adjustment to the usual rice crispy treat methods.

What are regular marshmallows?

marshmallow size chart featuring jumbo, regular, and mini

Marshmallows typically come in three sizes: jumbo (also called roasters), regular (or sometimes called large), and minis. Most recipes call for mini marshmallows but you can also make rice crispy treats with jumbo marshmallows, regular or large (this recipe), or even marshmallow fluff.

⭐ Can you use regular marshmallows to make rice crispy treats?

Yes, you can! You will need one bag (about 42 individual) regular marshmallows.

📋Ingredients needed

ingredients needed to make rice crispy treats with regular marshmallows

For these rice crispy treats, you will need:

  • Rice cereal: Such as Rice Krispies.
  • Regular marshmallows: If you’re not sure if you have regular (sometimes called large) or jumbo, reference the chart above. You will need 40-42 large marshmallows which is about 12 ounces of marshmallows.
  • Butter: I recommend using unsalted so you can control the amount of salt going in. If you only have salted butter, leave the additional salt out.
  • Salt: You’ll need just one pinch of salt.
  • Vanilla extract: If possible, I recommend using pure vanilla extract.

🔪Equipment needed

You will need a large mixing bowl, large pot, and a 9 x 13 inch pan.

👩🏻‍🍳Recipe instructions (step by step guide)

step by step guide on how to make rice crispy treats with regular marshmallows

Measure your rice cereal out in a large mixing bowl. Set it aside.

Spray a large cooking pot with non stick spray. Next, slice your butter and add it to the pot. Cook on low until the butter is melted.

Add your regular marshmallows and cook them on medium-low until they are completely dissolved in the butter. Be careful not to raise the temperature too much. Cook them low and slow while frequently stirring.

Once the marshmallows are completely melted add the vanilla extract and stir well.

Pour over the rice cereal. Using a spatula mix it well and then transfer it to a greased 9 x 13 inch pan.

Let rest one hour before cutting and serving. Do not refrigerate.

💬 Tips

  • Cook on medium low and stir, stir, stir! Since the marshmallows are large they take a little longer to melt down.
  • Stale marshmallows can make the treats come out too hard. Be sure to use fresh ingredients.

🍽 How to store leftovers

Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature. The rice crispy treats will be good for up to four days after making.

Equipment

  • 9 x 13 inch pan

Ingredients

  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter salted butter works fine if you prefer a little salt in your treats
  • 40 regular marshmallows This recipe is for regular (also sometimes called large) marshmallows. Refer to the photo in the post if you are unsure if your marshmallows are large or jumbo.
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 6 cups rice cereal

Instructions

  • Measure your rice cereal out in a large mixing bowl. Set it aside.
  • Spray a large cooking pot with non stick spray. Next, slice your butter and add it to the pot. Cook on low until the butter is melted.
  • Add your marshmallows and cook them on medium-low until they are completely dissolved in the butter. Be careful not to raise the temperature too much. Cook them low and slow while frequently stirring.
  • Once the marshmallows are completely melted add the vanilla extract and stir well.
  • Pour over the rice cereal. Using a spatula mix it well and then transfer it to a greased 9 x 13 inch pan.

Notes

  • This recipe is for regular marshmallows, not jumbo and not mini marshmallows. Make sure you are using regular ones. There is a comparison in the post you can refer to if you are unsure.
  • Cook on medium low and stir, stir, stir! Since the marshmallows are large they take a little longer to melt down.
  • Use fresh ingredients. Both rice cereal and marshmallows can go stale easily. Old marshmallows can make the treats come out too hard.
  • Do not press the rice cereal down with your hands, it makes the treats hard.
  • Do not refrigerate these treats or they will harden.
  • If needed, you can double this recipe.
