This Amish banana bread is a simple and wonderful recipe. It will also make your house smell amazing while it bakes.
I really enjoy Amish recipes. They’re always both simple and very tasty. This moist and delicious Amish banana bread is no exception.
This recipe is made extra moist by using sour cream. I used light sour cream because that’s what my husband brought back from the store (I didn’t specify, so he just grabbed one). Full fat sour cream is best, but if you’re like me and have light, it will also work in this recipe.
This recipe calls for three large bananas mashed with a fork. You’ll want to use ripe bananas. Any where from spotty to almost black work. The darker the bananas, the more moist and sweeter the banana bread will be.

🍌 Ingredients needed for this recipe
For this banana bread, you will need:
- All purpose flour: The base of the banana bread.
- Baking soda: To help the banana bread rise.
- Salt: You’ll need just ½ a teaspoon for this recipe.
- White sugar: To sweeten the banana bread.
- Cinnamon: To give the banana bread a little spice.
- Bananas: Bananas that are covered in spots or turning black are best. The darker the bananas, the sweeter the banana bread will turn out.
- Eggs: You’ll need two large eggs.
- Sour cream: Sour cream helps the banana bread stay extra moist.
- Butter: I recommend using unsalted butter but if you only have salted, just skip adding extra salt.
- Vanilla extract: I always recommend pure vanilla extract for baking.
🥡 How to store leftovers
Store this banana bread in an airtight container at room temperature. It will be good for 4 to 5 days.
You can double wrap this banana bread in aluminum foil and freeze it for up to three months after making.
👩🍳 Tips for this recipe
- Be sure to combine your dry ingredients first and stir them well. This helps ensure no one gets an unmixed bite of salt or baking soda.
- The darker the bananas, the sweeter the banana bread will be.
- Oven temperatures can vary slightly so test your banana bread with a toothpick in the middle. If it doesn’t come out clean, bake it for a few more minutes.
🌰 Variations
Try adding some walnuts, pecans, or chocolate chips to your loaf.
🥣 How to make to this recipe (step by step guide)
To make this banana bread, begin by preheating your oven to 350 degrees.
In a microwave safe dish, melt your butter and set it aside to cool. Be careful not to add it to the batter while it is hot or it could scramble your egg.
Next, add the dry ingredients (flour, sugar, baking soda, cinnamon, and salt) to a large mixing bowl (image 1). Stir well with a large spoon or spatula.
Add in your wet ingredients (vanilla extract, eggs, mashed bananas, butter, and sour cream) (image 2).
Mix well with a hand mixer until well combined and no longer lumpy.
Pour into a well greased 9 x 5 inch loaf pan (image 3). Bake for 50 to 55 minutes at 350 degrees or until a toothpick comes out clean from the middle.

I used an 8 inch loaf pan so I had to increase the time by about 10-15 minutes but it was beautiful to look at and delicious to eat.
