❤️ Why you’ll love this recipe

This is a simple, old fashioned Amish recipe. It doesn’t call for complicated ingredients and is quick and easy to make.

🥣 Ingredients needed

The ingredients needed to make Amish cornbread

For this cornbread, you will need:

  • All purpose flour
  • Yellow cornmeal: Be sure you grab cornmeal and not corn starch or corn flour.
  • Sugar
  • Baking powder
  • Salt
  • Buttermilk: There are usually plenty of dairy products like sour cream, butter, and buttermilk in Amish country. I prefer using store bought buttermilk but if you need to make your own combine one cup of milk with one tablespoon of lemon juice. Stir well and let rest for 10 to 15 minutes.
  • Vegetable oil: Or other neutral oil.
  • Egg

🍯Variations

If you want a sweeter cornbread, you can add a 2-3 tablespoons of honey.

🔪 Equipment needed

You will need a 9 x 9 inch pan. I recommend ceramic or aluminum, not glass. Glass does not heat as evenly.

⏲️ Recipe instructions (step by step guide)

A collage with three steps showing how to make Amish cornbread.

Begin by preheating your oven to 350° and greasing a 9 inch pan.

In a large mixing bowl combine the dry ingredients. Mix with a large spoon (image 1).

Next, mix in the wet ingredients and stir until everything is well combined (image 2).

Pour into your pan (image 3) and bake for 20 to 25 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean from the middle.

🥗 What to serve with this recipe

This cornbread goes great with chili, like this Amish Chili or this Copycat Wendy’s Chili. I also love serving it with this Amish Beef and Vegetable Soup!

👩🏻‍🍳 Tips

  • Make sure your oven is fully preheated before baking the cornbread.

🥡 How to store leftovers

Store any leftover cornbread at room temperature in a sealed container.

📋 Recipe FAQs

Is it better to make cornbread with butter or oil?

Oil will make the cornbread moist. Butter can add more flavor but it may make your cornbread more dense.

Why add buttermilk to cornbread?

Buttermilk will make your baked goods more tender. Buttermilk will also add more flavor.
