I am a huge fan of Amish recipes and this coffee cake is no exception to that! Amish recipes are always simple, comforting, and made with from scratch ingredients. Some of my family’s other favorite Amish recipes are this Amish apple cake and this Amish chicken which goes great with mashed potatoes. Amish food is just so comforting.

Why you’ll love this recipe

This yummy coffee cake uses simple ingredients and is so easy to make.

Ingredients needed

The ingredients needed to make Amish Coffee Cake.

For this coffee cake:

  • Flour: The base of the cake batter.
  • Baking soda and baking powder: To help the cake rise.
  • Salt: You’ll need just half of a teaspoon of salt.
  • Butter (softened): I recommend using unsalted butter. If you live near an Amish store, try using Amish butter.
  • Sugar: To sweeten the coffee cake.
  • Eggs: You will need two large eggs.
  • Sour cream: You can also use Greek yogurt.
  • Vanilla: If you can, I recommend using pure vanilla extract for baking.

For the crumb topping:

  • Brown sugar
  • Sugar
  • Cinnamon
  • Nuts (if desired): You can use pecans or walnuts.

Equipment needed

You will need a 9 x 9 inch baking pan, a mixing bowl, and a mixer.

Recipe instructions (step by step guide)

step by step guide on how to make Amish Coffee Cake. It is a collage with four steps listed.

For the cake

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees and grease a 9 x 9 inch pan.

Mix the dry ingredients (flour, sugar, baking soda, baking powder, salt, and cinnamon). Stir well with a large spoon.

Add the wet ingredients and mix well with a mixer. Pour the batter into the 9 x 9 inch pan. There may be extra batter leftover, do not overfill.

For the crumble

Mix all the ingredients for the crumbs in a bowl. Spread evenly over the top of the cake before baking. Add nuts, if desired.

Bake for 40 to 45 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean from the middle.

Variations

Add some pecan or walnut pieces on top, if desired.

Tips

  • You may have some extra batter left in your bowl. Do not overfill your baking dish.
  • Grease your pan well.

How to store leftovers

Store any leftover cake covered or in a Tupperware container at room temperature. The cake will be good for up to four days after baking.

How would I alter the ingredients if I use a 9×13 glass pan? Double it?

Yes, you could double it for a 9 x 13 pan. If you have an aluminum pan that may be better, the edges can get crispier in a glass pan.

Super quick, super easy, and super delicious. I made it in my cast iron skillet and it came out phenomenal. Only tweak was adding a second tsp of vanilla (personal preference).
