🥣 Ingredients needed

The complete list of ingredients and amounts can be found in the printable recipe card further below in the post.
For this recipe, you will need:
- Rice cereal: You can use name brand or generic cereal. Either work
- Butter: I used unsalted butter because that’s what I prefer to cook with. If you have salted butter you can use it, just be sure to leave the extra salt out.
- Mini marshmallows: You will need 16 ounces of mini marshmallows. Be sure to set aside one cup from the bag to mix in with the cereal.
- Brown sugar: This is the special ingredient that takes these treats to the next level.
- Salt
- Vanilla extract
🔪 Equipment needed
You will need a large bowl, whisk, spatula, large pot, and a 9 x 13 inch pan.
⏲️ Recipe instructions (step by step guide)

Add your cereal and one cup of marshmallows to a large mixing bowl (image 1).
In a large pot melt the butter and then whisk in the brown sugar, salt, and vanilla extract (image 2).
Next, add in the remaining marshmallows (image 3). Cook on medium-low while stirring continuously until everything is melted and well combined.

Pour the melted marshmallow mixture over the cereal and mix with a spatula until well combined (image 4).
Pour the mixture into a well greased 9 x 13 inch pan (image 5) and then spray your hands with non-stick spray. Gently pat the treats into place. Alternatively, you can use a spatula coated with non-stick spray or wax paper if you don’t want to use your hands. Be sure to be gentle, if you pat them down too hard they will become tough.
Let them sit for about one hour before serving.
👩🏻🍳 Tips
- Use fresh ingredients. Stale marshmallows or stale cereal can cause your treats to become hard or tough. Fresh is best!
- Don’t press down on the treats to hard. I recommend spraying your hands with non stick spray and then gently pat them down into the pan.
- Store these treats at room temperature. If they are refrigerated they will become hard.
- Let them sit for about an hour before serving. Any sooner and they may fall apart.
🥡 How to store leftovers
Store any leftover treats at room temperature in an airtight container. They will be good for up to four days after making.
📋 Recipe FAQs

Rice Krispie Treat and Rice Crispy Treat both mean the same thing. They’re a rice cereal treat made with butter, rice cereal, and marshmallows.
Most often they were patted into the pan too hard, refrigerated, or stale ingredients were used to make them.
I don’t recommend freezing these. The texture just doesn’t hold up once they are defrosted.

Made these for a bake sale and they sold out first. So gooey and way better than the ones from a box. The whole pan disappeared in one afternoon at my house.

I love how this made a full pan of Rice Krispie treat that yielded squares thick enough to pack in a lunch box. And the brown sugar added an extra boost of flavour.
