For these green beans, you will need:
- Canned green beans: Be sure to use plain cut green beans. There are many varieties including seasoned, French style, and Italian cut green beans be sure to select plain cut green beans. You can substitute frozen green beans, if needed.
- Bacon
- Ham base: I used the brand Orrington Farms but Better Than Bouillon also makes a ham flavored base. Ham stock will also work. If you can’t find ham base or ham stock, I recommend substituting chicken bouillon.
- Water: For the ham base.
- White onion
- Sugar, garlic powder, white pepper, and salt

You’ll need a large skillet or pot and a whisk (for the ham base).
⏲️ Recipe instructions (step by step guide)

Begin by frying your bacon in a large skillet (image 1). Fry it until it’s crisp and then set the bacon on paper towels to drain the fat. Let it cool.
Drain the bacon grease from the pan leaving just a little and cook your onion in the bacon grease until translucent (image 2).
Add the ham base to one cup of hot water and whisk until well combined (image 3).
Once your bacon is cool, chop it into small pieces and it back into the pan. Add the remaining ingredients and cook on low for about fifteen minutes (image 4).

- Make sure you fry your bacon until it is very crisp. This will help the green beans taste like the restaurant version.
- You can substitute chicken base or bouillon if you can’t find ham base.
- You can substitute frozen green beans, if needed.
