❤️ Why you’ll love this recipe
- Crockpot: This is an easy slow cooker recipe. Just a few simple steps then toss and go.
- Perfect for New Year’s Day: This is the best way to enjoy some delicious black eyed peas to ensure you have a lucky year.
- Flavor: Nothing bland here! There are tons of bacon, garlic, and onion to flavor the black eyed peas.
🥓 What ingredients do I need for this recipe?
For this recipe, you will need:
- Black eyed peas: You’ll need ½ pound of dried black eyed peas for this recipe. I highly recommend letting the peas soak overnight. If you are short on time and didn’t soak, it is OK but I think the peas will have the best flavor if soaked overnight.
- Olive oil: I recommend using extra virgin olive oil.
- Garlic salt, garlic powder, salt, and pepper: To season the black eyed peas with.
- White onion: You’ll need a medium onion for this recipe.
- Bacon: There’s no need to fry the bacon beforehand. You’ll want to chop it up and throw it in.
- Water: You’ll need 4 cups of water for this recipe.
🍲 How to make
If possible soak your black eyed peas for several hours or even overnight (image 1). If you are short on time, you can always do a quick soak or skip this step. Dice your onion and chop your bacon into small pieces (image 2).
Generously drizzle olive oil on the bottom of your crockpot. Next, add the beans, seasonings, and bacon pieces before adding the water (image 3).
Cook on low for 6 to 8 hours or on high for 4 hours.
Check and add more water as needed.
🥡 How to store leftovers
Store any leftovers in an airtight container in your fridge. Leftovers will be good for 4 days after making.
Have you ever wondered why black eyed peas are lucky? Supposedly the black eyed peas swell up when cooked so they represent prosperity. Corn bread which is often served along side represents gold and greens which are also commonly served with black eyed peas represent money.
If possible, I highly recommend soaking your black eyed peas the night before for the best flavor but if you can’t or have forgotten, don’t worry. Your black eyed peas will still be tasty if you miss this step but even soaking them for a few hours before will help a lot.

Black eyed peas are so special to me. I love how easy and affordable this recipe is. I’ve always felt they are nostalgic because it is what we would eat as a family in Florida when there was nothing else left in the fridge.

I respect the fish-not-chicken rule strictly on the New Year’s Day dinner table, but I have not heard about the beans yet. Now that I know, I absolutely must have them ready among all the food we eat at holidays! For good luck and good health, too!:)
